【Abstract】 The methods used to express approximate numbers in modern Chinese and Vietnamese are similar in many ways, but there are also some important differences. Since approximate numbers have similar meanings in both languages but are expressed using different grammatical structures, many Vietnamese learners who start studying Chinese may intentionally or unintentionally impose Vietnamese grammaratical structures onto the Chinese ones, leading them to make errors in usage. The differences between approximate numbers also lead learners to make frequent errors in usage.This study seeks to analyze the similarities and differences between how approximate numbers are expressed in Chinese and Vietnamese from the Chinese teaching point of view. In order to accomplish this goal, we have classified and analyzed various statistics to find out the reasons why Vietnamese learners often make errors when using approximate numbers. This research clearly shows the similarities and the differences between how approximate numbers are expressed in both languages, as well as showing why Vietnamese learners often make mistakes when using approximate numbers in Chinese. It is hoped that this research will help Vietnamese students studying Chinese and Chinese students studying Vietnamese better understand how to express approximate numbers.
