【Abstract】 In Chinese vocabulary, words denoting time are an integral part of Chineseexpressions of which time expressions play a very important role. Vietnamesestudents of Chinese often make many mistakes in their learning of words denotingtime. By examining and analyzing the commonly made mistakes by Vietnamesestudents in learning Chinese time-denoting words, teachers of Chinese can betterunderstand the learning habits of Vietnamese students and keenly anticipate thedifficulties faced by Vietnamese students.In the first place, my thesis makes a comparison between words denoting timein Chinese and Vietnamese to find out the similarities and differences between twolanguages and to point out the mistakes commonly made by elementary andintermediate Vietnamese students in their learning of time-denoting words inChinese. The objects of study of this thesis are students of Vietnam Sao DoUniversity (Vietnam Red Star University). By doing survey, studying the materialsof Beijing Language University, basing on processed documents, I recognize5most common mistakes made by Vietnamese students in learning time-denotingwords in Chinese. They are deficiency, redundancy, word choice, word order, newword creation. Surveying and looking into different mistakes, I come to understandwhy Vietnamese students make mistakes in using time-denoting words in Chinese,which are caused by both subjective and objective factors.In the thesis, we analyze the causes of the most common mistakes made byVietnamese students in using time-denoting words in Chinese and find out that themajor cause is the differences in Chinese, including its characteristics of timeexpressions and the misunderstanding of time-denoting words in Chinese. Thethesis also makes some suggestions on teaching words denoting time in Chinese.
